First Rule in Behavior Change
I want to briefly discuss one fundamental tool of behavior change; attitude!
Ask yourself what it is that you really want to accomplish; what is your mind-set regarding this issue? Positive or negative?
If it is positive and it is something that you really want, chances are changes WILL happen.
Problems arise when someone is being told they “have” to do something. When they embark on behavior change for the wrong reasons, plans are certain to fall apart.
Has anyone every told you that you have to quit smoking, or you have to lose some weight? Chances are when you tried to appease these individuals you did not make a permanent change in your life.
The fact is, the first rule in behavior change is that the individual must WANT to make the change themselves, or else it is never going to work.
When you really want something your thoughts, words, and actions reflect the change you are seeking and you surround yourself with positive affirmations of what is to come. The saying “if you can see it you can be it” is really true.
You actually WANTING to make a change is the very first step in behavior modification.
So, are you ready for change right now? What health behaviors would you like to improve upon?
Think about this, and begin to create a positive image of what the future “you” will look like and feel like. What will you be doing differently? Creating this “wellness vision” is the first step you can take to begin creating a new you and to change negative behaviors.
So, if you are ready to make a change, and it is YOUR idea, begin to craft your wellness vision as a first step towards leading a happier and healthier life.
You CAN do this! Best of luck!

New Year New You!
Happy 2015!
A lot of us spend the first few days of the New Year thinking about what we want to change. Making resolutions is commonplace in our society and it is a great way to make a fresh start; as long as you follow a few guidelines. Here are a few that I think will help you tweak your intentions!* Think about the big picture and then work backwards.
If you want to lose 10 pounds that's the big picture; but how are you going to get there? Choose smaller active goals to work towards getting there such as walking 3 days a week or starting a food journal. Choose one small goal at a time.
* Don't bite off more than you can chew!
Stick to one goal at a time. If you want to lose weight, quit smoking, and carve out more "me" time, just choose ONE of these to start your strategy off in the right direction. Trying to do too much too soon is a recipe for disaster.
* Reward yourself for any and all small changes that you make.
Continue to pat yourself on the back and tell yourself "Well done!" for the changes that you are making; whether it is losing half a pound or choosing lite dressing on your salad. Positive self-talk is one of the cornerstones of any behavior change, and it will help push you along when the going gets tough!
Good luck and Happy New Year!
